Immunological effects of Teucrium polium on neutrophils
Authors
Abstract:
Teucrium polium, a medicinal plant that belongs to the family Labiatae is widely used in folk medicine as antidiabetic, antibactrial and anti-inflammatory agent. In this study, we evaluated the effect of Teucrium polium on the mouse polymorphonuclear neutrophils. The animals were divided into five groups including four test and one control group, which orally received 50 and 100 mg/kg of aqueous and alcoholic extract of the plant and saline (in controls) respectively. Respiratory burst of the peritoneal neutrophils were evaluated after 10 days by chemiluminescenece assay using PMA as stimulator of oxidative burst. The results showed that alcoholic and aqueous extracts of the plant are effective in augmentation of neutrophil activity but this effect was statistically significant only for aqueous extract in 100 mg/kg. Results of this study showed that the anti-inflammatory effect of the plant may result partly from improvement in neutrophils function.

Teucrium polium: Liver and kidney effects
| May 2014 | 478 plants have been shown to produce oxidative stress and toxicity.[15-17] This toxicity inclines to be more common among certain patients and in specifi c clinical conditions. Thus, knowledge about successful prevention or amelioration of a medicinal drug requires information about pathogenic mechanisms of kidney damage and related risk factors.[1,8,18,19] In this regard, to be e...

full textRemarkable Anticancer Activity of Teucrium polium on Hepatocellular Carcinogenic Rats
The term cancer has been concomitant with despair, agony, and dreadful death. Like many other diseases, herbal therapy has been used to prevent or suppress cancer. The present study investigated the capability of the decoction of Teucrium polium L. from Lamiaceae family to protect liver cells against hepatocellular carcinoma in carcinogenesis-induced animal model. After 28 weeks of treatment wi...
full textProtective effects of hydroponic Teucrium polium on hippocampal neurodegeneration in ovariectomized rats
BACKGROUND The hippocampus is a target of ovarian hormones, and is necessary for memory. Ovarian hormone loss is associated with a progressive reduction in synaptic strength and dendritic spine. Teucrium polium has beneficial effects on learning and memory. However, it remains unknown whether Teucrium polium ameliorates hippocampal cells spike activity and morphological impairments induced by e...

Antibiotics provide the main basis for the therapy of microbial (bacterial and fungal) infections. Since the discovery of these antibiotics and their use as chemotherapeutic agents there was a belief in the medical fraternity that this would lead to the eventual eradication of infectious diseases. However, overuse of antibiotics has become the major factor in the emergence and dissemination of ...
